Drawn entirely in Dpaint, using only a mouse, the original story made use of a number of visual styles from a limited palette to Sumi-e brush painting. Several scenes were animated for additional effect.
The Tagata-Jinja Honen Matsuri festival at the heart of act three of The original Takozushi tale is actually celebrated in Japan; this was researched during the creation of the story.
This new storybook version of Takozushi features two entirely new adventures; the unreleased sequel, and a retrospective story that lets us see how Ika and the pig Ton Katsu met, and why Ton chose to follow his squidopus master.
I have long wanted to do a more elaborate version of The Legend Of Ika Takozushi because I really loved the story and characters Stephen created and brought to life. This work has been many years in preparation, from collecting the fine handmade Japanese paper that will serve as backgrounds for the illustrations, to researching traditional illustrative styles.
In the 1930's, Kamishibai served millions as a sort of wood and paper television; today, comics on the internet return to that concept in a very relevant way I think: an electric paper drama!
I truly hope you enjoy The Legend Of Ika Takozushi, as well as the back-of-the-bicycle authentic Kamishibai presentation of the story!
